The Perils of Pulling Out Your Smartphone Battery

Just a quick one tonight.

If you have a smartphone with a removable battery (like an Android phone or a Windows Phone) you should take particular care to avoid accidentally or intentionally removing the battery while the device is powered up. Smartphones are essentially small computers with file systems contained within their internal storage. Pulling the battery out would be similar to pulling out the battery from your laptop without external power being connected which could lead to data loss or corruption and could even prevent your device from starting up.

Recently, I was a bit impatient for my Windows Phone to shutdown and decided to pull out the battery to speed up the process but I found when I eventually restarted the phone that all was not well. My mail accounts would refuse to load and the integration with social networks like Facebook and Twitter simply would not refresh. I have also experienced far worse results with my Samsung Galaxy S where it would not boot up to the home screen at all requiring a hard reset to get things up and running again.

Anyway, the bottom line is that you should only ever pull out the battery if you absolutely have no other choice. If you have time, try and let the phone do its thing properly otherwise you might find yourself in a spot of trouble.
