Nokia Maps 3D – Better Than Google Maps?

Here’s something to check out in your spare time.

These days, Google Maps is often the place to go to get driving directions, traffic conditions and also a laugh at how you need to swim across the ocean to get to another continent if you attempt to get directions to an overseas destination. However, Nokia has been working on its own mapping solution for Ovi which is accessible through your web browser.

One very cool looking feature is the 3D view that will add three dimensional models of buildings and other landmarks onto the the map. For people like myself, this can provide additional visual aids when you are navigating if street names don’t work that well. In order to get there, visit maps.nokia.com in your browser. On the page, you’ll need to click on the “3D” button up the top right-hand corner after which you should be prompted to install a plugin. Once installed you can then delve into a selection of cities in 3D including Melbourne and Sydney in Australia.

What will be interesting to see is if this mapping product will be included in Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 devices in lieu or in addition to the standard Bing Maps that come with the operating system. Nokia Maps does look very slick so it would be a shame to see this service go under-utilised for something so intricately detailed.
